PCBs for the Automotive Industry

Thermal and mechanical load

Engine-bay electronics see repeated thermal cycles and vibration. Via reliability depends on plating thickness and laminate expansion, so the stackup and copper weights are chosen together.

Documentation

IATF 16949 requires control plans, traceability and change management. A supplier that cannot show lot records cannot support an automotive program, whatever the price.

What to send

Operating temperature range, thermal cycling requirement, connector and housing constraints, and the documentation level the customer's quality system expects.

Technical Specifications

Quality system
IATF 16949:2016
Layer count
1–38 layers

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What changes when a board is built for automotive use?

The process controls, not only the design: change notification, traceability, PPAP-style documentation and tighter incoming inspection. The board may look like an industrial one, but the evidence behind it has to survive an audit.

  • Which material is used for under-hood boards?

High-Tg FR-4 or a specialised laminate depending on temperature and thermal cycling. The stackup is chosen from the thermal load and the number of reflow passes, then confirmed with coupon testing.
