Soldering and Component Removal

Every soldering method has a thermal profile and a failure mode. Rework is a process, not an improvisation.

Soldering Processes for Printed Circuit Boards – Preparation and Component Removal

Mass soldering

Reflow for SMT, wave for through-hole at volume. The profile is set by the paste or alloy and verified with a profiler on the actual assembly.

Selective and hand

Selective solder for mixed boards with few through-hole joints; hand soldering for prototypes, repairs and parts that cannot take the wave.

Rework and removal

Preheat where mass is high, apply heat locally, remove with the right tool and clean the site. Record the rework: an undocumented repair is a future quality question.

Technical Specifications

IPC-A-610 workmanship

Frequently Asked Questions

  • When is selective soldering better than wave?

When only a few through-hole parts sit among SMT components. Selective solder targets those joints without exposing the whole board to a wave, which reduces thermal load and masking work.

  • What is the main risk when removing a component?

Lifting pads through uneven heating. Preheating the board, using the right nozzle and keeping the dwell short protects the laminate and the neighbouring parts; a lifted pad turns a rework into a scrap decision.
