PCB Assembly process--Electronic assembly quote and DIP assembly and component source

The process part

Print, place, reflow, inspect and test. It scales with placement count, pitch and the number of assembly passes.

The DIP part

Through-hole insertion plus selective or wave solder. Labour content depends on lead count and whether parts are hand-inserted.

The material part

The BOM at quoted quantities, with manufacturer and lead time stated. This is where most of the difference between quotes appears, so it deserves the closest reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do two assembly quotes for the same BOM differ?

Usually the material assumptions: one quote may use an authorised distributor and the other an open-market source, or one may assume a later delivery date. Ask which manufacturers and lead times are assumed before comparing totals.

  • Does DIP assembly change the PCB price?

It changes the assembly cost, and sometimes the board: through-hole pads need larger annular rings and clearance for wave shadow. Those design rules should be agreed before the board is fabricated.
