Inside a Metal-Core PCB Factory

Metal-core boards skip lamination as FR-4 knows it. The process is closer to bonding and machining.

Metal Core PCB - Technology

Base and bonding

The aluminium is cleaned and the thermal prepreg is bonded under heat and pressure. Bond quality decides thermal resistance and long-term reliability more than any later step.

Imaging and etching

A single copper layer is imaged and etched with the same principles as FR-4, but the base is thicker and stiffer, so handling and panel support differ.

Machining

Outlines, slots and cut-outs are milled or punched. Edges are deburred and, where the base is exposed, the mechanical drawing should say so.

Technical Specifications

Typical stackup
1–2 conductive layers on aluminium base
Dielectric
thermal prepreg, typically 0.05–0.2 mm
Board size
up to 580 × 1900 mm

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why is metal-core work usually single sided?

Because the aluminium base is conductive and the dielectric is thin. Adding a second signal layer means more dielectric and copper, which reduces the thermal benefit and complicates isolation; most applications do not need it.

  • What decides the dielectric thickness?

The isolation requirement and the thermal target together. Thinner dielectric conducts heat better but isolates less, so the value is chosen from the working voltage and the watts per area.
