PWB and PCB: What the Terms Mean

Where the terms come from

PWB emphasised the wiring function; PCB emphasised the circuit. As boards became denser the distinction stopped being useful, and PCB became the everyday term.

Where it still matters

Standards, legacy drawings and customer specifications may use either. When a package of documents mixes both, confirm the acceptance standard rather than debating the name.

Practical rule

Name the standard (IPC-6012B for fabrication, IPC-A-610 for assembly) and use one term consistently across the drawing set.

Technical Specifications

Acceptance
IPC-6012B / IPC-A-600H
Assembly standard
IPC-A-610
Layer count
1–38 layers

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which term should a drawing use?

Either, as long as it is consistent. PCB is the common term in commercial work; PWB still appears in older standards and in some aerospace and telecom documents. What matters is that the acceptance standard is named.

  • Does the term affect the manufacturing process?

No. The process is defined by the stackup, materials, finish and acceptance class. The name on the drawing does not change how the board is built or inspected.
