Ensuring PCBA Components Are Authentic

A part can look right and still be a re-mark. Authenticity is a process, not a single test.

Ensuring PCBA Components Are Authentic

Start with the channel

Authorised distribution and original manufacturers give a documented chain. Open-market brokers are used only when a shortage forces it, and then with extra testing and the customer informed.

Inspect what arrives

IQC checks packaging, markings, lot codes and moisture status. For suspect parts, X-ray and decapsulation compare the die and lead frame with the datasheet.

Keep the chain

Record the supplier, lot and date code against each assembly lot. If a failure appears later, traceability is what separates a component issue from a process issue.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is checked during incoming inspection?

Packaging and labelling, date and lot codes, marking style against the datasheet, and X-ray or decapsulation for suspect lots. Electrical verification on a sample follows when the part is critical or the source is new to us.

  • Why avoid open-market purchases for production?

Because provenance is unproven. An open-market part may be refurbished, re-marked or from a rejected lot, and the failure often appears after the boards ship. Franchised distribution costs more but carries traceability that survives a customer audit.
