Outsourcing a Prototype PCB Build

A prototype is a learning cycle. The goal of the first order is a fast answer, not the lowest price per board.

Guidelines for Quick turn Prototype Circuit Board Outsourcing

Send a complete package

Gerbers, drill, stackup, BOM, assembly drawing and test plan. Missing one of these usually costs a day in questions.

Fix the decisions early

Layer count, material, finish, assembly side and test coverage are cheap to decide now and expensive to change later.

Plan the iteration

Order a small quantity, keep the tooling, and expect a revision. A prototype that is built to learn something is doing its job even if it exposes a design change.

Technical Specifications

Prototype lead time
1–3 days for bare boards
Engineering review
free DFM/DFA before tooling
MOQ
1 pc — no minimum on boards, assembly or components

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which files should be sent for a prototype quotation?

Gerber or ODB++ data, the drill file, the BOM with manufacturer part numbers, the assembly drawing and any test requirements. If impedance or a specific stackup matters, say so in the first message rather than after the boards are made.

  • Why ask for a DFM review on a prototype?

Because the same review that catches a 0.05 mm trace error also catches a missing solder-mask opening or a component that cannot be placed. It costs nothing before tooling and a week after.
